More upsets unfolded on Day 6 of the 2025 Australian Open as the likes of Naomi Osaka and Jessica Pegula were bundled out of the women's draw. Both women put up a brave fight but were up against fired-up opponents.
The two were not alone as underdogs continued to have a field day at the season's opening, sparing not even the doubles teams with multiple Grand Slam titles to their name.
With third-round action half complete, let's take a look back at some of the big exits that sent shockwaves across the Australian Open on Day 6 of the tournament:
#5 Botic van de Zandschulp/Tallon Griekspoor def. Jamie Murray/John Peers
Jamie Murray and Johnny Peers have three Grand Slam men's doubles titles between them but all that history went out the window when they faced the all-Dutch pairing of Botic van de Zandschulp and Tallon Griekspoor in the Australian Open second round.
The Dutchmen, who otherwise focus more on their singles endevaors, managed to eke out a close opening set 7-5 before growing in confidence. They then sailed to 6-2 victory in the second against the off- color Brit-Aussie pairing.
#4 Belinda Bencic def. Naomi Osaka
Two players who have returned to the Tour after giving birth to daughters clashed in the third round of the Australian Open. It was Belinda Bencic who walked away with the win at the cost of Naomi Osaka, but the match was not without its twists and turns.
Osaka seemed to stamping her authority over the contest early with her big serve doing all the talking. Bencic, however, grew into the match as her groundstrokes became more piercing as she overcame a break deficit to draw level at 5-5
The two-time former champion developed an abdomen strain around the same time, hampering her movement and serve. She put up a valiant figth in the opening set tiebreaker, but Bencic's power was far too unforgiving. With the writing on the wall, Osaka pulled the plug on the match. Bencic now takes on another Slam winner, Coco Gauff.
#3 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina def. Jakub Mensik
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is making it a bit of a habit to come back from a two-set deficit at this year's Australian Open. Having done so against 29th seed Felix Auger Aliassime in his last match, he repeated the heroics in the third round against Jakub Mensik.
The young Czech player was in good form coming into the match, having scored a big upset over Casper Ruud in the last round. He seemed to sailing to victory and held a match point in the third set.
Fokina, however, had other plans. He denied his opponent the tiebreaker in the third set and went on a bit of a rampage in the next two sets. He tired his opponent out with his sharp angles and crafty play, eventually completing the 3-6, 4-6, 7-6(7), 6-4, 6-2 win. He awaits Tommy Paul in the next round.
#2 Donna Vekic def. Diana Shnaider
Donna Vekic inched closer to matching her career-best performance at the Australian Open, a quarterfinal finish, after outlasting 12th seed Diana Shnaider in an epic marathon.
Explosive hitting from both women rewarded them with a tiebreaker set each and all to play for in the decider. The Croat fell behind a break but rallied four straight games when down 3-5 to close out an emphatic 7- 6(4), 6-7(5), 7-5 victory.
Vekic thundered down 10 aces in total and was an impressive 74% of her first serve points, hinting at her serve hitting peak form at a crucial stage in the tournament. She will need it in the next round against fellow big-hitter Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
#1 Olga Danilovic def. Jessica Pegula
Olga Danilovic decided to bring a showcase of first-strike tennis to the Rod Laver Arena on Friday. And seventh seed Jessica Pegula found herself at the receiving end of the onslaught.
The two flat-hitting women went toe-to-toe early in this third-round contest, but the Serb kept pushing her more-fancied opponent back inch by inch with her piercing groundstrokes.
In all fairness, the first set could have gone either way had it not been for a brilliant tiebreaker from Danilovic. The Serb kept the intensity up as the winner count climbed to 28, with Pegula falling into an increasingly defensive stance. The final scoreline read 7-6(4), 6-1. Danilovic will take on Paula Badosa next.
