Navarro received a bye into the second round, where she was up against Ekaterina Alexandrova. The American drew first blood to go up a break in the opening set. She then served for the set at 5-3 and held three set points. However, her opponent fended them off to secure a crucial break of serve.
The set eventually went to a tie-break, in which Navarro came out on top to take the set. She was cruising through the second set after taking a 4-0 lead. Alexandrova stopped the skid with a two-game run, only for the American to snag another break of serve to go 5-2 up.
In a repeat of the first set, Navarro failed to serve out the match and threw Alexandrova a lifeline. However, she was able to close out the match on her second try for a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win.
Samsonova rallied from a set down to beat Marie Bouzkova 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 in her Adelaide opener. She took on former top 10 player Belinda Bencic in the second round. The Russian overcame a break deficit in the first set and saved two set points on her own serve as well to force a tie-break, which she won.
The finish line was well within sight for Samsonova, who led 4-1 in the second set. It was Bencic's turn to stage a turnaround, and she reeled off five games in a row to take the set. Both players had break-point chances on all but one of the first six games of the third set but neither could capitalize on their chances.
Bencic finally snagged a break in the seventh game to go 4-3 up, and that proved to be the end of the road for her. Samsonova nabbed the next three games to score a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-4 win.

Both players failed to start their season with a win when they lost their openers in Brisbane last week. Navarro snapped a three-match losing streak dating back to the end of 2024 with her win over Alexandrova. She's nowhere close to her best and had to dig deep after failing to serve out both sets on her first attempt.
Samsonova was on the backfoot several times in the previous round against Bencic but found a way to turn things around. She won 12 of the last 14 points to finish the match on a high. It was also her first win in Australia since 2023.
Both are capable of playing better than how they did in the previous round. Navarro had a career-best season last year, and her consistency could trump Samsonova's high-risk high-reward brand of tennis.
