Jelena Ostapenko vs Madison Keys preview
Defending champion Jelena Ostapenko will face former US Open finalist Madison Keys in the second round of the Adelaide International 2025 on January 8.
Ostapenko kicked off her title defense against World No. 24 Magdalena Frech. The Latvian was off to a slow start, and went down 4-0 within minutes. She tried to close the gap but was unsuccessful in her attempt to do so, and lost the set.
However, Ostapenko was quick to regroup after being outplayed in the first set. She dropped only two more games for the rest of the match, and wrapped up a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 comeback win.
Keys, meanwhile, drew fellow top-20 player Beatriz Haddad Maia in her opener here. The American put her best foot forward right off the bat, and set the tone for the match. She broke her opponent's serve twice in each set to secure a comfortable 6-2, 6-1 win.

Jelena Ostapenko vs Madison Keys prediction
Keys advanced to the quarterfinals of the ASB Classic in Auckland last week, where she lost to eventual champion Clara Tauson. She was in fine form against Haddad Maia in Adelaide. She won 90 percent of her first-serve points, and erased the only break point that she faced with ease.
Ostapenko competed in Brisbane last week, and was shown the door by Marie Bouzkova in her opener. It looked like another early exit was on the cards for her in Adelaide but she turned things around to win the match in dominant fashion against Frech.
Keys has a slim lead over Ostapenko in their rivalry. Only two of their five previous matches have been on hardcourts, with each player winning once. Both players are known for their powerful shotmaking, though it is their serve that sets them apart.
Keys can count on her serve to get herself out of trouble, unlike Ostapenko. The latter has also never mounted a successful title defense in her career so far. The American is likely to come out on top in this encounter to end her rival's hope of a title defense.
Pick: Madison Keys to win in straight sets.
