Jelena Ostapenko vs Magdalena Frech Preview
Eighth seed and defending champion Jelena Ostapenko will begin her title defense at the 2025 Adelaide International, by facing off against Magdalena Frech in the first round. The Latvian had an impressive 2024 season, winning two titles in Adelaide and Linz. However, barring those two tile runs she could not reach any semifinals.
The former Grand Slam champion began the 2025 season with a loss. Ostapenko began her 2025 season at the Brisbane International where she was the seventh seed. However, she unexpectedly lost to Marie Bouzkova in the first match of the new season. The first set was a close affair, going in the tiebreak. However, the Czech player pulled away after that, defeating Ostapenko 7-6 (0), 6-4.
Magdalena Frech had a good 2025 season, reaching two finals in Prague and Guadalajara. The Polish player won her maiden WTA title in the Mexican capital, overcoming Olivia Gadecki in the final in straight sets.
However, like Ostapenko, Frech began her 2025 season on a losing note as well. The Polish played her first match of the season against Suzane Lamens at the Brisbane International, with the Dutch player winning 7-5, 6-3.

Jelena Ostapenko vs Magdalena Frech Prediction
Jelena Ostapenko has a 56 percent win ratio on hard courts, reaching ten finals. The Latvian won five hard-court titles, the last of which came at the Linz Open last year. She also has the experience of playing on the big stages, as she won the 2017 French Open.
It was only in the last season that Magdalena Frech won her maiden WTA title. The Polish player has reached four hard-court finals, winning three titles on the ITF circuit. However, on the WTA Tour, the Pole has a poor 37 percent win record on hard courts.
Being the defending champion and the higher-ranked player, Ostapenko will be the overwhelming favorite in the match.
