Paula Badosa vs Ashlyn Krueger preview
Former World No. 2 Paula Badosa will take on USA's Ashlyn Krueger for a place in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Adelaide International.
Badosa made a phenomenal comeback from a debilitating back injury last year. Some of the highlights of the Spaniard's 2024 season included reaching the quarterfinals of the US Open, reaching the last-four stage at two WTA 1000 events, and winning the Mubadala DC Citi Open, which marked her first pro title victory since January 2022.
The World No. 12's first match of 2025 didn't end in her favor as she fell to Armenia's Elina Avanesya in her Brisbane International opener. She showed better form at this week's Adelaide International, defeating the dangerous Peyton Stearns from a set down to reach the second round.
Krueger, ranked 54th in the world, came into this year looking for a reversal of fortunes as she had dropped 10 of her last 18 tour-level outings. The American proved her mettle in Brisbane last week, upsetting sixth-seeded Anna Kalinskaya en route to a quarterfinal run.
The 20-year-old then fell in the second qualifying round in Adelaide earlier this week but received a Lucky Loser (LL) spot in the main draw of the 500-level event. She made the most of the opportunity, defeating Marta Kostyuk from a set down to make it to the Round of 16.

Paula Badosa vs Ashlyn Krueger prediction
Badosa displayed an all-round game during her comeback last year. The World No. 12 has impressive endurance and consistent groundstrokes from both wings, which makes her a force to reckon with from the baseline. That said, she tends to play conservatively on crucial points and has lost big matches because of her restraint.
Krueger, meanwhile, is far more aggressive than her older opponent. The World No. 15 has big flat groundstrokes and likes hitting winners at a whim. While she can be far more consistent, this style of play is likely to give Badosa some trouble if she is not on top of her game.
Pick: Krueger in three sets.
