Why Did Alexander Bublik Change His Nationality?

In November 2016, the year he turned professional, Alexander Bublik announced that he is changing his citizenship from Russia to Kazakhstan. He made this decision after receiving financial support from the Kazakhstan Tennis Federation. He complained that the Russian Tennis Federation did not support him.

After making that decision Bublik said: “I have been Russian all my life, but they (the Federation) never supported me. I was always the second, third, or fourth choice. So I thought, ‘Why should I play for them?’ For example, they helped others financially, but not me. But it’s not just about money, it’s also about encouragement. They would give everything to the guy who was number one and nothing to number three. I had a proposal (to represent Kazakhstan), and I accepted it. But I have the map of St. Petersburg tattooed on my arm.”
