The 2025 Australian Open is just a few days away, and all the top tennis players are currently preparing themselves for the spectacle in Melbourne. The draws for the men's and women's singles were released on Thursday, January 9.
One hundred and twenty eight men and women are officially named in the main draw at the Melbourne Major. Of them 14 men and 19 women are American. It is not a coincidence that some first-round matches feature two Americans both on the women's and men's sides.
Here are the All-American clashes from the first-round fixtures at the 2025 Australian Open
#5 Madison Keys vs Ann Li
One of the All-American 1R clashes at the 2025 Australian Open will feature 19th-seed Madison Keys taking on Ann Li.
Keys has made a strong start to the 2025 season. She reached the semifinal at the ASB Classic, where she lost to Clara Tauson. Currently, she is playing at the Adelaide International, where she will face Daria Kasatkina in the final.
Ann-Li started the season with a second-round loss against Katie Voynets at the ASB Classic. She then had to play in the qualifiers to enter the main draw at Hobart International. She won three straight matches to reach the second round in the main draw, where she lost to Dayana Yastremska.
This will be the first meeting between the players.
#4 Emma Navarro vs Peyton Stearns
Eigth-seed Emma Navarro will also be part of an All-American clash at the Australian Open when she takes on Peyton Stearns in the first round. Navarro has had a rocky start to the season, as she exited early from the Brisbane International. She could only win one match at the Adelaide International before being knocked out by Liudmilla Samsonova.
Peyton Stearns had an early exit at Brisbane International. At Hobart International, the American player won two consecutive qualifying matches to enter the main draw, including one against former Top-10 player Maria Sakkari. However, in the main draw, she lost to Paula Badosa.in the first round
Navarro has a 4-1 lead in the head-to-head against Stearns. The last time the two players met was the Bad Homburg Open, with Navarro winning 6-4, 6-1.
#3 Coco Gauff vs Sofia Kenin
One of the most high-profile All-American clashes in Melbourne will be the first-round match between two Major champions- Coco Gauff and Sofia Kenin. Gauff is one of the most in-form players on the Tour along with Aryna Sabalenka and is one of the top favorites for the title.
On the other hand, Kenin who went on a dream run in Melbourne back in 2020, has fallen off behind her peers due to injuries and inconsistent form. She will look to get a good start to the season by casing a massive upset.
The prospect of the upset is realistic as the last time these two players met, Kenin won against Gauff in the first round of the 2023 Wimbledon Championships.
#2 Ben Shelton vs Brandon Nakshima
On the men's side, one of the All-American clashes will see 21st seed Ben Shelton take on Brandon Nakashima. Shelton did not have the best start to the 2025 season. Being the top seed at the ASB Classic, he lost in the very first round to young gun Jakub Mensik in three sets.
Brandon Nakashima had a poor start to the 2025 season, having early-round exits at both the Hong Kong Open and the Adelaide International. While he lost to Lorenzo Sonego in the first round in Hong Kong, he lost to Rinki Hijikata in the second round in Adelaide.
Shelton and Nakshima have played each other twice, with Shelton winning both matches. The last time the pair met was at the 2024 Citi Open with the score being 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4) in favor of Shelton.
#1. Taylor Fritz vs Jenson Brooksby
The last of the All-American clashes at the first round of the 2025 Australian Open will see fourth seed Taylor Fritz take on Jenson Brooksby. Fritz opened his 2025 campaign at the United Cup. Even though he lost his first match against Felix Auger-Aliassime, he went on to win his next four matches and was instrumental in the USA's title-winning campaign.
Brooksby is coming back on the Tour after serving a suspension due to missed doping tests. The hiatus was also due to an extensive wrist injury that the American player suffered in 2023.
Brooksby and Fritz met only once in their careers at the 2021 US Open. Brooksby won the match in four sets, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (10), 7-5, 6-2.
