Amanda Anisimova took tennis fans by surprise when she announced her hiatus through Instagram in mid-2023, giving reasons for burnout and mental health concerns. The 22-year-old achieved her career-high WTA singles ranking of No. 21 in 2019 and has won two singles titles till date. Ahead of the 2024 season, she is ranked No. 339.

Anisimova's career got off to a great start when she won the girls' singles title at the 2017 US Open and defeated a top-10 player for the first time, Petra Kvitova at the 2018 Indian Wells Open. Her best major singles result is reaching the semifinals of the 2019 French Open, and quarterfinals of the 2022 Wimbledon.

Anisimova's playing style can be described as an aggressive baseliner, who can generate powerful groundstrokes from both wings. Her tennis idols growing up were Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova.

Amanda Anisimova was born on August 31, 2001, in Freehold Township, New Jersey, to parents Olga Anisimova and Konstantin Anisimov. Her older sister, Maria, attended Wharton's undergraduate business school and played college tennis for the University of Pennsylvania.

A few years before she was born, her parents moved to the U.S. from Russia in order to provide better chances for their older daughter. Both her parents worked in the banking and financial sectors.

It was around the age of five when Anisimova took up tennis. She says the reason she started playing the sport was because of her sister. Her father served as her main coach while she was a junior, and her mother also assisted in coaching her. She also started working with Nick Saviano when she was 11 years old. Max Fomine, who served as the Bryan brothers' coach, has been her traveling coach.

In 2016, Anisimova rose to a career-high ITF junior ranking of No. 2 in the world and won the prestigious Grade A tournament at age 14. She later won two more tournaments, the Grade 1 Yucatán Cup in late 2016 and the Grade A Copa Gerdau in early 2017.
