Amanda Anisimova will take on former US Open champion Emma Raducanu in the second round of the Australian Open 2025.

Anisimova was up against Maria Lourdes Carle in the first round here. The American was quick off the blocks as she raced to a 3-0 lead in the first set. However, her opponent halted her momentum by going on a two-game run.
The tide turned in Anisimova's favor again, and she nabbed the next three games to take the set. She led by a break in the second set only for Carle to get back on even terms. The American secured another break of serve after that and remained in front until the end to secure a 6-2, 6-3 win.
Raducanu took on 26th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in her opener here. Both players struggled to hold on to their leads in the first set, and there were a total of eight service breaks between them. The Brit held her nerve in the ensuing tie-break to clinch the set.
The second set had a few twists and turns as well. Raducanu led by a break twice, and even served for the match at 5-4 but failed to close out the proceedings. She then saved a set point on her own serve at 6-5 to force a tie-break, in which she outplayed Alexandrova to register a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) win.

Both players arrived in Melbourne with doubts about their health. Anisimova withdrew before her quarterfinal match at last week's Hobart International, and Raducanu pulled out of the ASB Classic at the start of the season. While neither showed signs of discomfort during their openers, there was a stark difference in the quality of tennis.
Raducanu threw in 15 double faults but managed to survive a tough challenge from Alexandrova to record her very first win of the year. She won 67 percent of her first serve points and struck 22 winners against 30 unforced errors. The peaks and valleys in her performance could be chalked up to this being her first match of the season.
Anisimova had a couple of hiccups against Carle but was never at risk of losing. She hit 25 winners compared to 28 unforced errors and won 63 percent of points on the back of her first serve.
Raducanu has only gone as far as the second round of the Australian Open since her debut in 2022. Anisimova, meanwhile, has reached the fourth round here on three occasions. The American's serve is more reliable than her younger rival, and she's likely to overwhelm her opponent with her precise shotmaking as well to come out on top in this duel.
