Frances Tiafoe vs Yoshihito Nishioka preview
Third seed Frances Tiafoe will take on Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka for a place in the semifinals of the 2024 Atlanta Open on Saturday (July 27).
Since reaching the quarterfinals of last year's US Open, Tiafoe has dropped 21 of his previous 40 tour-level outings. The American's recent underwhelming form was on display again this week, as he was made to go the distance in his opener at the ATP 250 tournament in Atlanta.
Having received a first-round bye, the former World No. 10 need more than two hours to dispatch Russia's Aslan Karatsev 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to reach the last four. While he has yet to get in a good groove, the 26-year-old will be eager to match his career-best result in Atlanta — a semifinal finish in 2022.
Nishioka, meanwhile, has endured a mediocre 2024 season on the ATP Tour before this week. The former World No. 24 had dropped 11 of his 21 matches, with his best run coming at the Eastbourne Open, where he reached the quarterfinals as a qualifier.
That said, the 28-year-old has given a good account of himself at the Atlanta Open. He defeated local favorites Mackenzie McDonald and Zachary Svadja in straight sets en route to the last eight.
Frances Tiafoe vs Yoshihito Nishioka head-to-head
Tiafoe leads Nishioka by a margin of 3-0 in their head-to-head meetings on the ATP Tour. The Japanese's lone victory over the American in a competitive match came in the final of the 2016 Winnetka Challenger (which is not counted in pro records).

Frances Tiafoe vs Yoshihito Nishioka prediction
Tiafoe has struggled with his groundstrokes lately, as they often fail to penetrate the court enough. The 26-year-old does possess a dependable serve, though; during his second-round win over Karatsev, he won 84% of his first-serve points.
While Nishioka isn't as good on serve as the American, he makes up for it with his return prowess. At 5'7", most balls land in his strike zone, allowing him to keep his opponents on the move from the baseline.
The keys for both Tiafoe and Nishioka will be to win the crucial points on their serve and return, respectively. The World No. 29, however, will have home support in Atlanta, which should give him an edge in this exciting match-up.
Pick: Tiafoe in three sets.
