Former world No. 17 Reilly Opelka will take on Alexander Kovacevic in the first round of the Atlanta Open on Monday.
Opelka returned to the men's tour after more than two years at the Hall of Fame Open in Newport this month. He went through a dreadful period on the sidelines due to multiple injuries which required surgery on his hip and wrist and a considerable amount of recovery time off the court.
The American marked his return with an impressive semifinal run at the 2024 Hall of Fame Open in Newport. He outclassed the likes of Constant Lestienne, Adrian Mannarino and Mackenzie McDonald en route to the last four, but couldn't edge past Alex Michelson. The 19-year-old defeated Opelka in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
Aleksandar Kovacevic has a win-loss record of 5-13 for the year, including quarterfinal runs in the Los Cabos Open and the Hall of Fame Open. He also reached the second round of the Australian Open, where he lost to Karen Khachanov in four sets.
Kovacevic put up an optimistic performance in Newport this month. He outfoxed the likes of Harold Mayot and Arthur Rinderknech en route to the quarterfinals, but couldn't make his mark against Alex Michelson. The American defeated Kovacevic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Reilly Opelka vs Aleksandar Kovacevic prediction
Opelka has shown great character to battle past career-threatening injuries and return to the men's tour this year. He successfully recovered from a hip injury in August last year but got into troubled waters again after being diagnosed with a sublax tendon on his wrists. The American will be hoping to amass some valuable game time under his belt in Atlanta.
Kovacevic, on the contrary, has registered strong results on the hard courts as compared to other surfaces. He entered the main draw of the Australian Open via the qualifiers and reached the second round for the first time in his career. The American has a versatile all-around game and is constantly improving at the highest level.
It's no surprise that Opelka's serve is the most potent weapon in his armor. The 6-foot-11 American has incredible reach on court and the ability to win points at will on his serve. If Kovacevic manages to adjust his game quickly and target Opelka's weaknesses, he could have a say in this bout. However, it is most likely that Opelka manages to stamp his authority in this bout and begins his campaign with a win.
Pick: Opelka to win in three sets.
