At the US Men’s Clay Court Championships in Houston, world No. 15 Feliciano Lopez won beat Paolo Lorenzi 6-4, 7-6(4) in the second round to set up a second round encounter against Carlos Berlocq, who beat German Bjorn Phau 6-1, 6-0.
No. 5 seed Kevin Anderson beat Brazilian Joao Souza 6-3, 6-4 and will play fellow big server Sam Querrey today.
American teen Ryan Harrison upset seventh seed Alex Bogomolov Jr. 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 while American Bobby Reynolds upset no 8 seed Ivo Karlovic 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-3.
Meanwhile, in Casablanca, Alexandr Dolgopolov and Denis Istomin were beaten at the Grand Prix Hassan II in Casablanca.
Second seed Dolgopolov lost to Italian Flavio Cipolla 6-4, 6-1 while fourth seed Istomin fell 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-2 to Russian Igor Andreev.
“It was a difficult match in difficult conditions [a lot of wind],” commented Andreev. “I’m happy that I managed to win and qualify for the quarter-finals. This is a good event for me. I only played here once before and reached the semi-final back in 2009. Denis has been playing very well lately and this win gives me a lot of confidence.”
