Alex Michelsen vs Lorenzo Sonego Preview
Eighth seed Alex Michelsen will take on Italy's Lorenzo Sonego in the second round match at the ASB Classic Auckland on Wednesday (Jan. 8).
In their first-round matches, both of them won in the deciding set. Michelsen dropped the first set in a tie-break against India's Sumit Nagal, before winning the match, 6-7(8), 6-4, 6-2.
On the other hand, World No. 54 Sonego won a marathon against Canada's Gabriel Diallo 7-6(5), 2-6, 7-6(7) in which he had to save a match point as well.
Their performances last week were also similar. The American youngster, Michelsen won the first round against Christopher O'Connell in Brisbane, before losing to Jordan Thompson in the second round. 29-year-old Sonego won the first round against Brandon Nakashima in Hong Kong last week, before going down against Cameron Norrie in three sets.
Alex Michelsen vs Lorenzo Sonego head-to-head
Michelsen and Sonego have met on two occasions in the past. Their first meeting was at the Cagliari Challenger in 2024 on the clay court, which Sonego won 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
They met again a few months later, this time in the final of ATP Winston-Salem on the hard court. The Italian once again emerged victorious 6-0, 6-3 to lift the trophy.

Alex Michelsen vs Lorenzo Sonego prediction
20-year-old Michelsen has been in better form lately. He ended the 2024 season by reaching the semifinal in Metz and the semifinal of ATP Next Gen Finals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, Sonego has struggled since winning the Winston-Salem title. He could not reach any semifinal after that and had four consecutive first-round defeats at the US Open, ATP Chengdu, ATP Beijing and Masters 1000 Shanghai.
Sonego is more experienced and has won both the meetings against Michelsen but the American seems to be more mature now and in better form.
The Italian already played a three-hour marathon in the first round, so he may want to save some energy for the Australian Open.
Pick: Michelsen to win in three sets.
