One of the quarterfinals at the 2025 ASB Classic will feature a clash between two young Americans—Alex Michelsen and Nishesh Basavareddy.
Michelsen had a breakthrough year in 2024, reaching two finals at Newport and Winston-Salem and also making a semifinal run in Metz. He has yet to win a title, but the American youngster continues to show significant improvement.
Michelsen started his season off at the Brisbane International, where he lost 5-7, 3-6 to Jordan Thompson in the second round. At the ASB Classic, the eight seed began his campaign with a 6-7 (8), 6-4, 6-2 win over Sumit Nagal. In the next round, he won 7-6 (3), 6-2 against Lorenzo Sonego.
Nishesh Basavareddy, on the other hand, could not make a significant mark on the main ATP Tour in 2024 as he mostly played at the Challenger level. However, the American teenager reached seven finals on the Challenger Tour, winning two titles. His performances saw him qualify for the ATP Next Gen Finals.
Basavareddy qualified for the main draw at the Brisbane International this year but lost 4-6, 6-4, 1-6 to Gael Monfils in the first round. At the ASB Classic, the young American won 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-3 against Botic Van de Zandschulp, and 6-2, 6-1 over Daniel Altmier in the qualifiers.
Once in the main draw, Basavareddy won 6-2, 6-2 against Francisco Comesana. His biggest win came in the next round when he won 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 against second seed and defending champion Alejandro Tabilo.
