Gael Monfils vs Zizou Bergs preview
Veteran Gael Monfils will take on qualifier Zizou Bergs in the final of the ASB Classic 2025.
Monfils rallied from the brink of defeat in the first round to score a 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over Pedro Martinez. He beat Jan-Lennard Struff and Facundo Diaz Acosta in straight sets to make the semifinals, where he was up against rising young star Nishesh Basavareddy.
A closely contested first set went Monfils' way after he narrowly edged out Basavareddy in the tie-break. The two were on even terms for most of the second set, until the Frenchman secured the decisive break in his favor, and went on to win the match 7-6 (5), 6-4.
Bergs won both of his qualifying round matches in three sets to book his place in the main draw. He then beat Isaac Becroft and Luca Nardi in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals, where he staged a comeback to beat Roberto Carballes Baena 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Bergs faced seventh seed Nuno Borges for a spot in the summit clash. The qualifier went on a five-game run in the first set to claim it with ease. He led by a break in the second set, only for his opponent to reel off five consecutive games to snatch the set from him.
Bergs struck first in the third set to go 4-2 up, after which the tide turned in Borges' favor. The latter bagged three games on the trot and served for the match at 5-4. The Belgian stopped his opponent from closing out the match and went on a three-game run to register a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 win.

Gael Monfils vs Zizou Bergs prediction
Monfils is still giving the youngsters on the tour a run for their money at the age of 38 years. He beat Basavareddy, a player half his age, in an entertaining duel in the semifinals to reach his 35th career final. Bergs is having a great week in Auckland as well, and has progressed to his maiden final on the ATP Tour.
Bergs has won four of his six matches this week, including qualifiers, in three sets. He's had plenty of close calls but has held his nerve to come out on top. Monfils almost went out in the first round but since his escape act against Martinez in the first round, he has played really well.
Monfils has won five of his last six finals, with his loss to Jannik Sinner in the final of the Sofia Open 2021 being the only blemish on his record. The Frenchman will be the favorite to win the title given his experience, though Bergs cannot be written off that easily.
Pick: Gael Monfils to win in three sets.
