Seventh seed Naomi Osaka will face fifth seed Clara Tauson in the final of the ASB Classic in Auckland on January 5, 2025. Both players will look to win their first singles title since 2021.

The Japanese started her campaign at the WTA 250 event with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Israeli qualifier Lina Glushko and followed up by with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Julia Grabher to book her place in the quarterfinals. There, she came back from a set down to beat Hailey Baptiste 6-7(2), 6-1, 6-2 to set up a semifinal clash against Alycia Parks.

Osaka put in a dominant display to defeat the American 6-4, 6-2 and reach her first singles final since the 2022 Miami Open.

Clara Tauson, meanwhile, started her run in Auckland with a comprehensive 6-2, 6-3 win over Italian qualifier Luisa Stefanini before edging out Sofia Kenin 4-6, 7-6(7), 7-6(3) in a thrilling encounter to book her place in the quarterfinals.

The Dane beat top seed Madison Keys in the last eight 6-4, 7-6(9) in two tight sets to seal her spot in the semifinals. There, she faced her third successive American opponent in Robin Montgomery, registering a 6-4, 6-3 win to reach her first singles final since 2021.

Osaka and Tauson have both looked in good nick lately, so it's hard to pick a favorite for the final, and we could have an interesting encounter on our hands.

The Japanese has had decent numbers on her first serve in Auckland, winning 113 of 150 points (75.33%), serving 26 aces. Osaka will look to maintain her aggression in the final and will look to attack from the first point.

The Dane has a pretty effective serve that has fetched her 41 aces so far in the WTA 250 event. She has won 120 of 169 points so far on her first serve during the tournament. Like Osaka, Tauson is also a hard hitter and will need to have an attacking approach if she's to come out on top against the Japanese.
