Gael Monfils vs Nishesh Basavareddy preview
Gael Monfils will face off against Nishesh Basavareddy in the semifinals of the 2025 ASB Classic on Friday, January 10.
Monfils commenced his new season at the Brisbane International, where he defeated Basavareddy, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, in his opener. However, he succumbed to a straight-sets defeat against top-seeded Novak Djokovic in the second round.
In Auckland, Monfils registered a comeback win against Pedro Martinez in the first round. He then secured back-to-back straight-set wins against Jan-Lennard Struff and Facundo Diaz Acosta to reach the semifinals. This is the first time Monfils has reached the semifinals of a tournament since the 2024 Mallorca Championships in June.
Meanwhile, Basavareddy was impressive with his performances across ITF and Challenger tournaments, winning two titles last year. He earned a couple of wins in the qualifiers at Brisbane to start the new season before falling to Monfils in the first round.
Basavareddy made it to the Auckland main draw yet again via qualifiers. The young American has had a tremendous run so far, defeating Francisco Comesana, second-seed Alejandro Tabilo and eighth seed Alex Michelsen to reach the semifinals.

Gael Monfils vs Nishesh Basavareddy prediction
This is the second time within two weeks that Monfils and Basavareddy will lock horns with each other.
Monfils was powerful and clinical with his serves last time around, hitting 18 aces across the three sets. The Frenchman will mostly rely on his strong serves and quick movements to prevail in the clash. His aggressive returns could also cause problems for his 19-year-old opponent.
Basavareddy will be keen to level the scores in Friday's clash. He will have to keep the balls deep against Monfils, who is known for playing far behind the baseline and counterpunching.
Monfils has the edge over Basavareddy when it comes to experience and overall play. Hence, the Frenchman is expected to come out on top and face either of Nuno Borges or Zizou Bergs in the title clash.
Pick: Gael Monfils in straight sets
