Seventh seed Naomi Osaka will face Israeli qualifier Lina Glushko in the first round of the ASB Classic in Auckland. The winner of the match will face either Julia Grabher or Leyre Romero Gormaz in the second round.

Osaka won 21 out of 38 main-draw matches during the 2024 season, most notably reaching the quarterfinals of the Qatar Open. The Japanese finished her season at the China Open, where she beat Lucia Bronzetti, Yulia Bronzetti and Katie Volynets to reach the fourth round. Here, she was forced to withdraw against Coco Gauff.

The Japanese's performances saw her return to the Top 100 of the WTA rankings and she is currently 58th.

Lina Glushko mostly competed on the ITF circuit in 2024, but she also managed to make it to the main draw of the Monterrey Open after winning her qualifiers against Gabriela Lee and Anna Dalinina. She reached the second round before losing to Magdalena Frech.

Glushko entered the qualifiers of the ASB Classic and beat Louisa Chirico 7-6(3), 6-3 before registering a 7-5, 7-6(4) victory over local girl Monique Barry to book her place in the main draw of the WTA 250 event.

Osaka's experience will make her the overwhelming favorite coming into this match. After some promising performances in 2024, the Japanese will be eager to start 2025 strongly after a substantial break from tennis.

Osaka is a powerful hitter and will no doubt look to attack from the first point, not to forget her serve will also come in handy. The Japanese's mentality also seems considerable as compared to her period of struggle in 2021.

Glushko's first serve numbers during the ASB Classic qualifiers have been anything but impressive, as she has won just 59 out of 99 points on it (59.6%). The Israeli has amassed four aces while serving five double faults.

Glushko's return numbers weren't bad during the ASB Classic qualifiers, as she won 89 out of 161 points (55.3%). The 24-year-old will have to be at her absolute best if she is to stand a chance of defeating Osaka.

While the Israeli has done well to reach the main draw, her lack of experience on the WTA Tour compared to Osaka's quality makes the latter the heavy favorite to come out on top.
