Day 10 of the Australian Open 2019 will begin with an exciting quarterfinal clash between the fourth seed Naomi Osaka and the sixth seed Elina Svitolina. Both will be seeking their first semi-final at this Slam which guarantees the fact that both will be trying hard and giving their all to achieve that.
21-year-old Osaka had a breakthrough season last year, winning her maiden Slam title at the US Open where she beat the great Serena Williams in a controversial final. The Japanese has been one of the most consistent youngsters on the Tour and it is heartening to see her carrying on her form in the very next Major.
In four matches so far, she dropped a set twice but each time she has managed to raise her level under pressure and pass the test with flying colours. It's not just the Australian Open title that is beckoning her but the No. 1 ranking as well. And that should keep her motivated.
However, it is not going to be easy against the sixth-seeded Elina Svitolina whom she trails 2-3 in their head-to-head meetings. The Ukrainian has come to this tournament after finishing last season with the WTA Finals trophy. Although she did have an early loss in Brisbane in between, the 24-year-old certainly knows by now how to play the sport's toughest competitors.
Svitolina too conceded a couple of sets but the way she moved around the court to demolish Madison Keys in their fourth-round clash was particularly impressive. She indeed does possess the tools to blunt Osaka's aggression but how consistently she manages to do so, remains to be seen.
