Alexander Zverev vs Lucas Pouille preview
Second seed Alexander Zverev will aim to kickstart his Grand Slam season on a high as he takes on Lucas Pouille in the first round of the 2025 Australian Open on Sunday, January 12. The German had an excellent 2024 season, as he was one of only two players who registered over 60 wins on the Tour. He won two Masters 1000 titles in Rome and Bercy and made it to the final of the French Open, where Carlos Alcaraz beat him.
The World No. 2 has had a decent start to the 2025 season. He defeated Thiago Monteiro 6-4, 6-4 and Zhang Zhizhen 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 at the United Cup. However, he withdrew from the competition before his quarterfinal fixture against Alexander Shevchenko owing to an injury.
Lucas Pouille did not play extensively on the main ATP Tour in 2024. The Frenchman was mainly active on the Challenger Tour, reaching five finals and winning two titles. On the main Tour, his most notable performance came at Wimbledon, where he reached the third round but had to forfeit his match against Alex de Minaur.
Pouille started his 2025 season at the Brisbane International. The Frenchman had to play in the qualifiers. He won his first match 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(6) against Jason Murray Kubler. He lost in the next round 4-6, 4-6 to Nishesh Basavareddy and failed to qualify for the main draw.

Alexander Zverev vs Lucas Pouille prediction
Zverev is a proven performer on the Grand Slam stage. The German has reached two Major finals in his career, at the 2020 US Open (lost to Dominic Thiem) and the French Open last year. At the Australian Open, Zverev has a 25-9 record with two semifinal finishes - one in 2020 and one last year.
Pouille's recent form has been poor. However, the Australian Open has seen the Frenchman's biggest success to date. He reached the semifinal in Melbourne in 2019. He has three hardcourt titles to his credit, but the last one came in 2018 when he won the Open Sud de France with a 7-6(2), 6-4 win over Richard Gasquet in the final.
Zverev will be the overwhelming favorite in the match as he is the second seed and in good form.
