Casper Ruud vs Jakub Mensik preview
Sixth-seeded Casper Ruud will take on Czech youngster Jakub Mensik in the second round of the Australian Open. Ruud began the 2025 season at the United Cup, registering wins against Tomas Machac (7-6(6), 5-7, 6-4), and Hubert Hurkacz (7-5, 6-3).
The sixth seed faced an uphill five-set battle against Spain's Jaume Munar at the Australian Open. He had to bring out his best tennis to win the match, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. Ruud won 69 percent of his first serve points, four percentage points less than his Spanish opponent. However, he changed his game style, coming to the net 47 times and winning 81 percent of approach points.
The Norwegian was also more effective on his second serve, winning 57 percent of the second-serve points. His overall return quality was slightly better than Munar's, as he won 37 percent of the return points compared to the Spaniard's 33 percent.
Mensik entered the 2025 season after a tremendous 2024 season. The Czech player earned the title of "Newcomer of the Year" at the ATP Awards. In 2025 he started with back-to-back quarterfinal appearances at the Brisbane International and the ASB Classic.
At the Australian Open, Mensik started with a 6-1, 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-3 win over Georgian qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili. He served an astounding 31 aces in four sets, winning 82 percent of his first-serve points. His big serving ensured he saved 11 of the 12 break points he faced.

Casper Ruud vs Jakub Mensik prediction
Ruud has been a top 10 player, ranking as high as 2. The Norwegian has the experience of playing three Major finals, including a hard-court Major at the 2022 US Open. However, his win-loss record at the Australian Open is a meager 7-5 with a third-round run last year being his best performance. Overall, the former World No. 2 has reached six hard court finals, with the only title coming at the 2021 San Diego Open, with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Cameron Norrie in the final.
In his young career, Mensik has a 61 percent win ratio on hard courts. His one career final came on the surface, at the 2024 Qatar Open, in which he lost 6-7 (12), 4-6 against Karen Khachanov.
The top seeding and experience will give Ruud the overall advantage in the upcoming match.
Pick: Ruud to win in four sets
