Coco Gauff vs Sofia Kenin preview
World No. 3 Coco Gauff will take on Sofia Kenin in the first round of the Australian Open 2025.
Gauff had a strong start to 2024, with a title defense in Auckland, followed by semifinal appearances at the Australian Open and the Indian Wells Open. She also made the last four at the Italian Open, and the French Open, and won the doubles title at the clay court Major.
Following a fourth-round exit from Wimbledon, Gauff went through a rough patch. She failed to defend her titles at the Cincinnati Open and the US Open and parted ways with her coach Brad Gilbert in the aftermath of those losses. She then teamed up with Matt Daily and won the China Open and the WTA Finals to wrap up the 2024 season on a high.
Gauff's 2025 started at the United Cup, where she was named the tournament MVP. She won all five of her singles matches, and beat Iga Swiatek in the final as well to clinch the title.
Kenin compiled a 14-22 record last year, with a runner-up finish in Tokyo being her best result. She started the new season with a second-round loss to Clara Tauson at the ASB Classic. She progressed to the quarterfinals of last week's Hobart International, where she lost to Maya Joint.

Coco Gauff vs Sofia Kenin prediction
Kenin is a former Australian Open champion, winning the title back in 2020. She even beat Gauff for the first time back then and needed three sets to do so. However, after reaching the upper echelon of women's tennis that year, she has struggled mightily.
Their career trajectories have gone in opposite directions, and Gauff has supplanted Kenin as one of the top players on the women's circuit. The 20-year-old beat her older compatriot when they met for the second time en route to winning the title in Auckland in 2023 in straight sets.
They met later that year at Wimbledon, and despite her poor results, Kenin managed to upstage Gauff in a massive upset in the first round. The latter would then go on to win her maiden Major title at the US Open a few weeks later.
Kenin has tallied 55 main draw wins since the start of 2021. Gauff, meanwhile, won 54 matches just last year and surpassed her rival's total victories by winning all five of her singles matches this year. She has been in the midst of a purple patch since last October, and given her form, she's unlikely to slip up this time.
Pick: Coco Gauff to win in straight sets.
