Eighth seed Emma Navarro will take on compatriot Peyton Stearns in the first round of the Australian Open on January 14. The winner of the match will face either Julia Grabher or Wang Xiyu in the second round.

Emma Navarro has had a disappointing start so far in 2025, having won just one out of three matches. The 23-year-old's first tournament was the Brisbane International, where she was the second seed. However, the American lost 5-7, 5-7 to Kimberly Birrell in the opening round.

Navarro next entered the Adelaide International, where she was seeded second. The World No. 8 received a bye to the second round and booked her place in the quarterfinals after beating Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-6(4), 6-4. Here, she lost 4-6, 4-6 to Liudmila Samsonova.

Like Emma Navarro, Peyton Stearns too started her 2025 season at the Brisbane International and beat Veronika Kudermetova 6-2, 6-3 to reach the second round. Here, the then-World No. 47 was edged 6-7(7), 6-4, 5-7 by third seed Daria Kasatkina.

The American then entered the qualifiers of the Adelaide International and reached the main draw after registering wins over Malene Helgo (6-2, 6-1) and Maria Sakkari (6-4, 6-7(10), 6-3). Here, Stearns faced Paula Badosa in the first round and started the match well by narrowly winning the first set via a tiebreak.

However, the Spaniard bounced back in the second set and won it 6-3 to force the match into a decider. Badosa then won a tightly fought final set 7-5 to clinch victory.

Emma Navarro vs Peyton Stearns head-to-head

Navarro and Stearns have faced one another twice so far on the WTA tour, with the former triumphing on both occasions. Their most recent encounter came in the second round of the 2024 Bad Homburg Open, with the top-10 player winning 6-4, 6-1. Stearns' only win over her compatriot came in the quarterfinals of an ITF event in Florence back in 2019.

Emma Navarro vs Peyton Stearns prediction

Navarro will enter the match as the favorite to win given her higher ranking and superior record over Stearns. That said, the latter has given a tough fight to the likes of Daria Kasatkina and Paula Badosa, and she is capable of giving the World No. 8 a run for her money.

Navarro's first-serve numbers from her first three matches in 2025 have been pretty disappointing, as she has won just 80 out of 134 points (59.7%). The 23-year-old has a pretty decent all-round game as she mixes powerful groundstrokes well with a never-ending desire to run all over the court and counterpunch. Her net game will also come in handy.

While Stearns' first-serve numbers so far in 2025 have not been particularly impressive, it's better than those of Navarro, as she has won 202 out of 309 points. The 23-year-old has also served 24 aces while coughing up 18 double faults.

Peyton Stearns' game is bordered around some hard hitting, and she will heavily rely on her service games while looking for the odd decisive break.

While Navarro is the World No. 8, she has not had the best of starts to 2025. However, she has an impressive record against her compatriot and that could see her just about edge out a win.

Pick: Navarro to win in three sets.
