29th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime will take on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round of the Australian Open. The winner of the match will take on either sixth seed Casper Ruud or Jakub Mensik in the third round.

Auger-Aliassime started his 2025 season at the United Cup, where he lost 6-0, 4-6, 4-6 to Borna Coric before edging out Taylor Fritz 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. The Canadian next competed at the Adelaide International, where he was the fifth seed.

He beat Arthur Cazaux, Marcos Giron and top seed Tommy Paul to book his place in the final. Here, the 24-year-old faced second seed Sebastian Korda and won 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to win the sixth ATP title of his career. Auger-Aliassime then beat Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 to reach the second round of the Australian Open.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina started his 2025 season at the Hong Kong Open and suffered a 6-4, 3-6, 3-6 defeat to compatriot Jaume Munar in the opening round. He then competed at the Adelaide International and registered his first win of the season by defeating Roberto Bautista Agut 7-5, 6-2. The Spaniard, however, lost 3-6, 3-6 to eventual runner-up Sebastian Korda in the second round.

Davidovich Fokina faced Shang Juncheng in the opening round of the Australian Open and saved four set points to win the first set by a tiebreak. He led 5-2 in the second set before the Chinese were forced to retire. The Spaniard thus reached the second round of the Melbourne Major for the fifth time in his career.

Felix Auger-Aliassime vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina prediction

Auger-Aliassime will enter the match as the favorite to win given his superior head-to-head record against the Spaniard as well as his recent form. That said, Davidovich Fokina in his day is capable of being a more-than-formidable opponent.

Auger-Aliassime served 19 aces in his last match and will look to produce more of them against the Spaniard. The Canadian has a powerful forehand and will be eager to attack from the start. That said, he has a tendency to over-hit his shots and create unforced errors, something he would be looking to avoid.

Davidovich Fokina did not serve any aces in his last match but he did serve four unforced errors, and he will have to be careful not to produce too many of those, especially against someone who has had his number in all of their past encounters.

The Spaniard's pace, drop shots and return game will all come in handy in dealing with Auger-Aliassime's aggression.

Given past record, it's hard to rule out a victory for the Canadian but it may not be too much of a surprise if Davidovich Fokina comes out on top.

Prediction: Auger-Aliassime to win in four sets.
