Gael Monfils vs Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard preview
38-year-old Frenchman Gael Monfils will take on his 21-year-old compatriot Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round match at the Australian Open 2025 on Tuesday, January 14. The winner of the match will play either Francisco Comesana or Daniel Altmaier in the second round.
Monfils started his 2025 season with a second-round exit at the Brisbane International, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. The 38-year-old then competed at the ASB Classic, where he made a stellar comeback to beat Pedro Martinez 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 in the first round.
Monfils then registered straight-set wins over Jan-Lennard Struff, Facundo Diaz Acosta and Nishesh Basavareddy to reach the final. Here, he beat Zizou Bergs 6-3, 6-4 to win the ATP 250 event.
Like Monfils, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard started his 2025 season at the Brisbane International, where he reached the semifinals following wins over Nick Kyrgios, Frances Tiafoe and Jakub Mensik. Here, the 21-year-old faced Reilly Opelka and lost 3-6, 6-7(4).
Mpetshi Perricard was next scheduled to face Bu Yunchaokete in the first round of the ASB Classic but withdrew from the tournament. This year's Australian Open will be his first appearance in the main draw of the tournament.

Gael Monfils vs Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard prediction
Two-time Australian Open Quarterfinalist, Monfils is making his 19th main draw appearance at the Melbourne Park. He has a 16-2 record in the Australian Open first round matches.
Last year, Monfils' performances at the Grand Slams were far from impressive as he lost in the second round of the Australian Open against Argentina's Tomas Martin Etcheverry in straight sets. His overall record at the Grand Slams in 2024 was five wins and four losses.
On the other hand, Mpetshi Perricard won two ATP titles in 2024, which included the Swiss Indoors in Basel.
The youngster is making his debut appearance in the main draw of the Australian Open, but it would be tough for Monfils to break his serve. If it goes to the fifth set, Monfils would have a very difficult task as the veteran has not played a five-setter since 2023 French Open.
Pick: Mpetshi Perricard to win in five sets.
