18th seed Hubert Hurkacz will face Miomir Kecmanovic in the second round of the Australian Open 2025.

Hurkacz was drawn to face Tallon Griekspoor in the first round here. There wasn't much separating the two at the start of the match. The Pole let go of three set points on his opponent's serve at 5-4 in the first set. However, he managed to snag a break of serve in the 12th game to take the set.

Hurkacz led by a break in the second set, only for Griekspoor to claw his way back to make it 4-4. The Pole gained the upper hand again as he nabbed the next two games to claim the set. Things came to a head in the 10th game of the third set.

Serving to stay in the match, Griekspoor bravely fought off five match points. However, Hurkacz wasn't to be denied and wrapped up the proceedings on his sixth match point for a 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 win.

Kecmanovic faced his older compatriot Dusan Lajovic in his opener here. The match had a lot of back-and-forth between the two. The 25-year-old captured the first set but couldn't stop his rival from staging a comeback to take the second set.

Kecmanovic put himself in the lead by clinching the third set but Lajovic wasn't going out without a fight, and bagged the fourth set. The former broke the latter's serve in the fourth game of the deciding set, and held on to that lead until he crossed the finish line for a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win.

Kecmanovic, meanwhile, had to dig deep to survive a stern test from Lajovic. He blasted 72 winners across five sets and hit 59 unforced errors.

Kecmanovic won the first set of his only prior match against Hurkacz at the Canadian Open. However, the latter staged a comeback and lost only three more games for the rest of the match.

Both players have had a good start to the new season. Kecmamovic reached the semifinals in Adelaide, while Hurkacz was the runner-up at the United Cup. The former reached the fourth round of the Australian Open last year, and the latter went a round further.

Kecmanovic's 8-30 record on hardcourts against top 20 players makes him the underdog in this match. The Serb's struggles against quality opposition should give Hurkacz enough breathing room to execute his plan to perfection.
