Draper was up against World No. 47 Mariano Navone in his opener here. The young Brit quickly went down a break in the first set. While he fought off a couple of set points on his serve towards the end, he couldn't stop his opponent from closing out the set in the next game after that.
Draper got back on track by taking the second set but Navone put himself in the driver's seat by claiming the third set. The Brit initially squandered his lead in the fourth set but bagged the last three games of the set to clinch it. He took control of the match in the fifth set and outplayed his opponent to complete a 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 comeback win.
Kokkinakis took on Roman Safiullin in the first round. The Aussie started the match with a break of serve but gave up his advantage, and got broken towards the end of the set as well to lose the opener.
Kokkinakis jumped to a 4-1 lead in the second set and held on to the lead this time to take the set. He broke Safiullin's serve in the third set to go 3-2 up, only for his opponent to break back immediately to level the score.
The Australian then nabbed the next three games to capture the set. Kokkinakis rallied from a break down in the fourth set to force a tie-break, in which he came out on top for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory.

Draper backed out from the United Cup at the start of the season due to an injury. Thus, it was no surprise to see him going the distance against Navone in his first match of the year. While he looked relatively fit, the lack of match play was evident with missed forehands and sloppy footwork.
Kokkinakis endured a tough fight from Safiullin but rained down 23 aces en route to his sixth career win at his home Slam. He as well as Draper are gunning to reach the third round of the Australian Open for the first time.
