Defending champion Jannik Sinner will square off against Holger Rune in the fourth round of the Australian Open 2025.

Sinner kicked off his title defense with a 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5), 6-1 win over Nicolas Jarry. He fought back from a set down to beat Tristan Schoolkate 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3 and reach the third round, where Marcos Giron awaited him.
A single break of serve in each set helped Sinner secure a two-set lead. When he put himself 2-0 up in the third set, it looked like the match was a done deal. However, Giron nabbed the next two games to level the score. It didn't take too long for the Italian to get back on track, and he swept the next four games to register a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 win.
Rune needed five sets to move past Zhang Zhizhen in the first round. He then beat Matteo Berrettini 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6) to reach the third round, where he was up against Miomir Kecmanovic. A close first set slipped out of the Dane's grasp after he got outplayed in the tie-break.
Rune bounced back to take the second set, only for Kecmanovic to take control of the match by winning the third set. The former looked down and out after the latter took a 4-2 lead in the fourth set. However, he turned the tables on his opponent with a four-game run to capture the set.
Rune took the early lead in the decider but Kecmanovic broke back immediately to remain hot on his tail. The Dane made one last push, and bagged the last three games to score a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback win.

Sinner's win over Giron extended his unbeaten run to 17 matches, a streak that started with his title-winning run at last year's Shanghai Masters. He's also on a 10-match winning streak at the Majors, dating back to his US Open triumph.
Rune has been tested in every round, and survived his second five-set tussle of the tournament by beating Kecmanovic. While he won his first couple of matches against Sinner, he lost the last two times they met.
Rune famously beat five top 10 players in a row, including Novak Djokovic, to win the Paris Masters 2022. He has gone 2-9 against them since winning that title. Given his record against the elite of the sport and Sinner's form since last year, the Italian should be able to continue his title defense.
