Jannik Sinner vs Nicolas Jarry preview
World No. 1 and defending champion Jannik Sinner will take on Nicolas Jarry in the first round of the 2025 Australian Open on January 13.
Sinner had a breakthrough year in 2024, winning two Grand Slam titles. The Italian started his year at the Melbourne Major, beating Novak Djokovic in the semifinals and then Daniil Medvedev in the final to win his maiden Slam trophy. The Italian did not participate at the Olympics but ended the year very strongly, winning the ATP Finals.
However, just like last year, he did not participate in any warm-up tournaments before the Australian Open and will face Jarry in the first round very much short on match practice.
Unlike the Italian, Jarry had a lukewarm 2024 season. He ended the year with a 21-24 win/loss record on the tour, with a first-round exit at all four Grand Slams of the year. This year, in the lead-up to the Australian Open, he played at the Brisbane International.
There, he reached the quarterfinals before falling to Jiri Lehecka. In four previous main draw appearances Down Under, Jarry has gone past the first round only once so far.
Jannik Sinner vs Nicolas Jarry head-to-head
Sinner and Jarry have met twice on the ATP Tour so far, and are level 1-1 in the head-to-head. While the Chilean won their opening encounter in 2019, their battle at the 2024 China Open went Sinner's way.

Jannik Sinner vs Nicolas Jarry prediction
Jannik Sinner is understandably the massive favorite coming into the clash on Monday. Even though the head-to-head record between the two is level at the moment, the first match-up, which came five years ago when Sinner was still a teenager yet to find his feet on the ATP Tour, can be safely discounted.
At the same time, the China Open clash between the two was not a cake-walk for the Italian, and he had to battle for three sets before downing Jarry. With Sinner short on match practice as well, things could get stuffy for the World No. 1.
That aside, Jarry does not have a lot of weapons at his disposal to trouble Sinner, especially on the hard-courts and even more in Melbourne where the defending champ is in his comfort zone.
Sinner's versatility of shots, baseline consistency and on-court moment are bound to be a mismatch against the Chilean on Monday, making for a rather easy win, at least on paper.
Pick: Jannik Sinner in straight sets
