Fourth seed Jasmine Paolini will take on Mexico's Renata Zarazua in the second round of the 2025 Australian Open on Thursday, January 16.

Following a group-stage exit at the 2024 WTA Finals, Paolini commenced the new season at the United Cup. With straight-set wins over Belinda Bencic and Chloe Paquet, the World No. 4 helped Italy reach the last-eight. However, a 2-6, 2-6 loss to Karolina Muchova saw her and the Italian side bow out of the tournament in the quarterfinals.

In Melbourne, Paolini squared off against Wei Sijia in the first round. The Italian secured a bagel in the first set before wrapping up the second in ten games. She dominated the match with well-guided shots and broke four times to come out on top, 6-0, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Zarazua kickstarted her season at Brisbane International. She defeated Viktoriya Tomova in the opener before losing to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka in the second round. She then reached the Hobart International main draw via qualifiers. The Mexican then suffered another second-round exit, losing to Elise Mertens.

Zarazua's second-ever appearance at the Melbourne Major commenced with a 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-2 win over Taylor Townsend. With this result, Zarazua became the first Mexican to win an Australian Open match in 25 years. It is also just her third career win across all Grand Slams.
