Jessica Pegula vs Maya Joint preview
Seventh seed Jessica Pegula will square off against home favorite Maya Joint in the first round of the Australian Open 2025.
Pegula had another solid season in 2024 despite some injury setbacks. She could only win her first title of the year in June, when she won the WTA 500 in Berlin prior to Wimbledon. That didn't lead to a deep run at the All England Club where she lost in the second round.
Pegula then went on a tear during the summer. She defended her Canadian Open title, and was the runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka at the Cincinnati Open and the US Open, the latter being her first Major final as well. She sustained another injury towards the end of the year, which affected her WTA Finals campaign, ultimately pulling out of the tournament after losing two of her group stage matches.
The American started the new season on a cautious note as well. She skipped the Brisbane International as she still wasn't fully fit. She returned to action at the Adelaide International, and made it all the way to the final, where she went down to Madison Keys.
Aussie teenager Joint made her Grand Slam debut at last year's US Open. She beat Laura Siegemund in her opener before losing to Keys in the next round. She started 2025 with a second-round exit from the Brisbane International, and followed it up with her maiden WTA semifinal at the Hobart International.
Jessica Pegula vs Maya Joint head-to-head

Jessica Pegula vs Maya Joint prediction
Joint chose to turn professional instead of going down the college route as she originally intended to do. The switch has worked out quite well for her, and she scored her first win over a top 50 player en route to the semifinals in Hobart. After falling in the final qualifying round of last year's Australian Open, she will now make her main draw debut at her home Slam after receiving a wildcard.
Pegula crashed out in the second round of last year's Australian Open due to a nagging injury. Following her withdrawal from Brisbane this year, it appeared as if she would lose early at the Melbourne Major once again, if she competed at all. However, she put those fears to rest with a run to the final in Adelaide.
Pegula has enjoyed a decent level of success at the Australian Open, with three quarterfinal appearances and a 13-5 record. Joint is touted as the next big thing in Australian tennis but talented youngster is unlikely to one-up her established American rival, even with the home crowd backing her.
Pick: Jessica Pegula to win in straight sets.
