Lorenzo Sonego vs Stanislas Wawrinka preview
2014 Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka will open his campaign against Italy's Lorenzo Sonego on Tuesday (Jan. 14).
39-year-old Wawrinka is making his 19th main draw appearance at the Australian Open, but he has not won a match at Melbourne Park since 2021.
Wawrinka won 10 out of the 27 ATP level matches he played in 2024. His best result came at the Stockholm Open in October, when he reached the semifinal after knocking out Andrey Rublev.
On the other hand, 29-year-old Sonego has not impressed on the ATP tour either, since winning the Winston-Salem Open in August. The Italian has won only five main draw matches out of the 14 he has played since the US Open. Sonego lost his first round matches at the US Open, ATP Chengdu, ATP Beijing and Shanghai Masters 1000.
World No. 55 Sonego started his 2025 season in Hong Kong, where he defeated the sixth seed Brandon Nakashima 7-6(4), 6-3 in the first round. But he went down 2-6, 6-4, 1-6 in the second round against Cameron Norrie.
He played in Auckland last week, where he edged Canadian wildcard Gabriel Diallo in a three-hour marathon in the first round. In the next round, USA's Alex Michelsen knocked him out 7-6(3), 6-2.
Lorenzo Sonego vs Stanislas Wawrinka head-to-head
Stanislas Wawrinka and Lorenzo Sonego have met only once before, in the semifinal at 2023 ATP Umag. Lorenzo Sonego was the second seed but Wawrinka defeated him 6-3, 6-4 to reach the final. That was Wawrinka's last ATP final.

Lorenzo Sonego vs Stanislas Wawrinka prediction
Former World No. 3 Wawrinka had not lost a first-round match at the Australian Open in his first 16 main draw appearances at the event, but he went down in his opening round matches in 2023 and 2024, both times in the fifth set.
The three-time Grand Slam champion can still surprise his opponent with his single-hand backhands. But if it goes to five sets again, the stamina might cause some problem for him.
Meanwhile, Sonego does not have a great record at the Australian Open so far. He he has won only six out of the 12 matches he has played at Melbourne Park.
The Italian had his best result at the Australian Open in 2022, when he lost to Miomir Kecmanovic in the third round. He would be hoping that his match against Wawrinka goes long, so that stamina comes into play.
Pick: Sonego to win in five sets.
