Naomi Osaka vs Caroline Garcia preview
Naomi Osaka will take on Caroline Garcia in the first round of the Australian Open on January 13. The winner of the match will take on either 20th seed Karolina Muchova or Nadia Podoroska in the second round of the Grand Slam.
Osaka started her 2025 season at the ASB Classic in Auckland and she beat Lisa Glushko, Julia Grabher, Hailey Baptiste, and Alycia Parks to reach the final of the WTA 250 event. It was her first title clash since the 2022 Miami Open.
Here, she faced Clara Tauson and won the opening set 6-4 before retiring due to an injury. While Osaka was unable to win her first title since 2021, the Japanese's performances saw her rise to 51st in the WTA rankings.
Caroline Garcia, meanwhile, had a disappointing 2024 season, as she could win just 17 out of 34 matches. The Frenchwoman's struggles saw her drop from 20th to 48th in the WTA rankings by the end of the year.
Garcia's last tournament was the Guadalajara Open, where she reached the semifinals following wins over Ena Shibahara and Marie Bouzkova (walkover). Here, the former World No. 4 lost 6-7(4), 5-7 to eventual champion Magdalena Frech.
Garcia will start her 2025 season at the Australian Open.

Naomi Osaka vs Caroline Garcia prediction
While Caroline Garcia won the last match between the two, Osaka's recent form makes her the favorite to come out on top, especially if she is at her fittest.
Osaka served 31 aces during the ASB Classic in Auckland and considering her serve, there is a good chance of her fetching more free points at the Australian Open. The Japanese won 75% of points on her first serve during the WTA 250 event in New Zealand.
Garcia's last tournament saw her serve 17 aces and win 71 out of 102 points on her first serve (69.6%). However, the Frenchwoman also coughed up 13 double faults in two matches, and will have to make sure not to produce too much of those against Osaka, who looks in good nick at present.
Both players are hard hitters of a tennis ball and prefer to attack in full force. So eventually, it could come down to composure and who produces lesser errors.
While Garcia on her day is a formidable opponent, Osaka seems more composed these days and that should propel her to victory and a place in the second round of the Australian Open.
