Paula Badosa vs Talia Gibson preview
11th seed Paula Badosa will face Australian wildcard Talia Gibson in the second round of the 2025 Australian Open on Wednesday (Jan. 15).
Former World No. 2, Badosa did not have a perfect start to the season in Brisbane two weeks back. She was beaten in the first round by Armenia's Elina Avanesyan 3-6, 6-1, 2-6.
The following week, she earned a hard-fought first round win against the American qualifier Peyton Stearns 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-5. In the next round, she faced another American, Ashlyn Krueger, who stunned Badosa in another marathon.
In the first round of the Australian Open, Badosa finally played a match this season, which did not go to the third set, as she defeated China's Xinyu Wang 6-3, 7-6(5).
On the other hand, 20-year-old Gibson started her season in Brisbane as a wildcard. She fought hard in her first match against World No. 43 Marie Bouzkova, but went down 6-7(5), 6-3, 3-6.
Her next stop was Hobart where she faced the top seed Lucia Bronzetti in the first round and tried hard, but lost 2-6, 6-7(7). She finally won a match this season at the Australian Open, when she knocked out World No. 94 Zeynep Sonmez 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-1. This was her first Grand Slam win as well.

Paula Badosa vs Talia Gibson prediction
Spain's Badosa has never managed to go beyond the fourth round in her previous five appearances at the Australian Open. Her best result came in 2022 when she reached the fourth round, where she was beaten in straight sets by Madison Keys.
But she would be hoping to do better this time. She had reached the quarterfinal at the US Open five months back.
27-year-old Badosa could be back in the Top 10 of the WTA Rankings if she can have a great run at the 2025 Australian Open. She will certainly start as the favorite against Talia Gibson.
The Australian will seek support from the home crowd, as she has beaten a Top 100 player only once in her career. That win was in the first round against Zeynep Sonmez.
Gibson would be hoping that she can stretch Badosa as much as possible as she has not faced any player ranked as high as the Spaniard before.
Pick: Badosa to win in straight sets.
