Tommy Paul vs Christopher O'Connell preview
Tommy Paul will begin his Australian Open campaign in 2025 against Christopher O'Connell of Australia in the first round on Monday, January 13.
Tommy Paul is probably the most consistent American tennis player on the ATP Tour at the moment after Taylor Fritz. He has a decent all-round game and remains one of the most dependable players on the Tour. He reached the semifinals of the Adelaide International recently and attained a career-high ranking of world No. 11.
On the other hand, O'Connell reached a career-high ranking of world No. 53 in 2023. He is ranked 70th in the world at the moment and was eliminated in the first and second rounds of Brisbane International and Adelaide International, respectively. The 30-year-old Australian will, however, enjoy the home conditions in Melbourne.

Tommy Paul vs Christopher O'Connell odds
Tommy Paul vs Christopher O'Connell prediction
This match might be closer than the rankings suggest. Christopher O'Connell will be buoyed by the home crowd and conditions and can be a dangerous player with his powerful groundstrokes. Hence, he could do some damage to put the American in trouble.
However, Paul made it to at least the third round in each of the four Grand Slams last year and will fancy his chances of reaching the second week of the tournament this time around. He usually does not commit too many errors in a match and does not allow his opponents too many opportunities. He can hit well off either wing and has good court coverage as well.
While he might be able to take a set from Tommy, O'Connell will need to play out of his skin to pull off an upset against the American.
Pick: Tommy Paul to win in four sets
