The countdown for the first of the four Grand Slam tournaments, the Australian Open, has begun. Nicknamed the Happy Slam, the Australian Open will commence from January 12, 2025, to January 26, 2025. The tournament is scheduled to start on the second Sunday of the month for the second time in the year. With 128 players competing in each draw, the qualifying matches will be played from January 6 to January 11, 2025.

The Australian Open was attended by 1.1 million fans in 2024, 20,000 more than in 2023. The tournament comprises men’s and women’s matches in singles, doubles, mixed doubles, and wheelchair categories. The famous energy brand Red Bull has joined hands with the major to host Red Bull Baseline, including the six best players competing for a tiebreak event. Additionally, fans get to enjoy the sensational performance by Dylan Alcott alongside a live DJ. Ten-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic will make a comeback to win his 25th Grand Slam title. 2024 defending champion and ATP Finals winner Jannik Sinner will showcase his admirable skills along with Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. The local star Alex de Minaur, Nick Kyrgios, and Alexei Popyrin will be competing in the tournament.

What kind of surface is the Australian Open played on?

The Australian Open has been played on hardcourt surfaces since 1988.

The tournament has been played on Blue Green Set court since 2020. Earlier, from 2008 to 2019, the Australian Open was played on a blue Plexicushion hardcourt. Before 2007, that tournament was played on a green-colored Rebound Ace surface. During its foundation years, the tournament was played on grasscourts till 1987.

Known for its fast-paced style of play, the Australian Open will include an indoor court for extreme heat or rainy weather. The tournament will be played on three courts, namely John Cain Arena, Rod Laver Arena, and Margaret Court Arena, which has the facility of retractable roofs.

Jannik Sinner lifted the men's singles title, defeating Daniil Medvedev. Aryna Sabalenka successfully defended her title in 2024, registering a win against Qinwen Zheng in the final.
