Ben Shelton vs Gael Monfils preview
World No. 20 Ben Shelton will face 38-year-old Gael Monfils in the fourth of the 2025 Australian Open on Monday, 20 January.
Shelton, 22, who reached his career high ranking, No. 13 five months back in August, dropped out of the top 20 after some disappointing losses at Paris Masters 1000 and Japan Open. He also suffered an upset loss against Jakub Mensik in his first match of the season in Auckland.
But now he appears to be back in form, as he defeated Brandon Nakashima and Pablo Carreno Busta in the first two rounds here. In the third round, he knocked out the 16th seed Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(5).
On the other hand, former World No. 6 Monfils has won nine out of the 10 matches he has played this season. His only loss came against Novak Djokovic in Brisbane, and he also became the oldest ATP title winner in last 50 years, last Saturday in Auckland.
2016 and 2022 Australian Open Quarterfinalist, Monfils stunned the fourth seed Taylor Fritz in his third round match. So he can cause some trouble for Shelton as well.

Ben Shelton vs Gael Monfils prediction
The American youngster reached the quarterfinal in his first appearance at Melbourne Park two years ago, when he lost to his compatriot Tommy Paul.
Shelton has 81.8% win record at the Australian Open and he is the highest ranked player left in his quarter, as Taylor Fritz, Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev have lost aleady.
Meanwhile, Monfils will be looking to reach the quarterfinal stage at the Grand Slams for the 11th time in his career. The Frenchman has already spent nine hours and 18 minutes on court for his three matches at the 2025 Australian Open.
Monfils has reached the second week of any Grand Slam for the first time since 2022 Australian Open. It could be another long, gruelling match for Monfils and it could be too much for him at the age of 38.
Pick: Shelton to win in five sets
