Shelton began his run in Melbourne with a straight sets win over compatriot Brandon Nakashima. He then beat Pablo Carreno Busta and 16th seed Lorenzo Musetti in four sets each to reach the fourth round, where veteran Gael Monfils awaited him.
Neither player got a whiff of a break point in the first set, which went to a tie-break. Shelton gained the upper hand in it to take a one-set lead. While both players had a few break point chances in the second set, neither was able to convert them successfully. Another tie-break ensued, which went Monfils' way this time.

Sonego beat Stan Wawrinka in his opener in four sets and followed it up with a five-set win over Joao Fonseca. He needed four sets to beat Fabian Marozsan in the third round as well, and was up against Learner Tien in the fourth round.
A 3-0 headstart laid the groundwork for Sonego to claim the first set. He broke his younger rival's serve twice to clinch the second set with ease. Tien stormed back to take the third set to keep himself in contention. However, his comeback was nipped in the bud as the Italian conceded only one game in the fourth set to register a 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win.
