Juan Martin del Potro ended a storied career in his hometown of Buenos Aires. The Argentine played an exhibition match against his long-time friend Novak Djokovic to conclude his tennis career.

The atmosphere at the match was emotionally charged at the Estadio Mary Teren de Weiss. Both players enjoyed the admiration and applause of the crowd, especially the Argentine, as he was playing for the last time in front of his home crowd.

Del Potro looked rusty on the court as he had not played a lot on the Tour in the last few years. However, in a light-hearted match, the Argentine emerged victorious, winning the match 6-4, 7-5, often delighting the capacity crowd with his signature forehand shot. After the match, the duo shared a warm hug at the net.

Gabriela Sabatini and Gisela Dulko increased the shine of the event with their presence

The final match of Juan Martin del Potro was graced by the presence of two other Argentine tennis greats. Gabriela Sabatini and Gisela Dulko were present at the match.

Sabatini is one of the sport's greats. The former World No. 3 is considered one of the best to ever play the sport. The Argentine contested in four Grand Slam finals, with her only Major title coming at the 1991 Wimbledon, where she defeated Steffi Graf. She also partnered with Graff to win the doubles title at the 1988 Wimbledon. The Argentine also won the silver medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, falling short against Graff in the final.

Gisela Dulko is a former World No. 1 in doubles. She teamed up with Italy's Flavia Panetta, and the duo won two of the biggest prizes in tennis, the WTA Finals in 2010 and the 2011 Australian Open.

The duo of Sabatini and Dulko entered the match between Djokovic and Del Potro during the exhibition. The quartet played a few sets of mixed doubles tennis, entertaining the crowd before the women left for the two men to finish the match.

Juan Martin del Potro gifted Novak Djokovic with wine bottles

Juan Martin del Potro made the moment even more memorable by gifting custom-made wine bottles to Novak Djokovic. The bottles had embossed images of the duo playing some of the crucial matches of their careers.

One of the bottles had the match between the duo at the Rio Olympics. The Argentine won the match in straight sets. However, in the second wine bottle, the Argentine embossed the image of the Serb winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics, commemorating the former World No. 1's journey to clinch the elusive title.

Overall, Djokovic had a 16-4 record against Del Potro in their head-to-head. However, the Argentine always had the edge over the Serb at the Olympics, also defeating him in the bronze medal match at the 2012 London Olympics.

"Surely his career could have been greater"- Novak Djokovic on Juan Martin del Potro

On the eve of Juan Martin Del Potro's retirement, Novak Djokovic had high praise for the Argentine. The Serb expressed his disappointment that injuries, especially knee injuries curbed the true potential of the Argentine to be a great of the sport.

"His career is legendary as it has been, but I believe that, as all of us here would agree, he has had bad luck with injuries. Surely his career could have been greater if he had not had knee injuries. I have had some serious injuries, but not with such bad luck as him." said Djokovic (via tennis-infinity.com)

Del Potro won 22 titles in his career. His biggest prize was winning the 2009 US Open, where he defeated Roger Federer in the final. He contested his other Major final at the 2018 Wimbledon, losing to Novak Djokovic.

Representing his country, Del Potro won two Olympic medals- bronze at the London Olympics in 2012, and the silver medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016. He also won the Davis Cup in 2016 for Argentina.
