Mertens' biggest triumphs have all been in doubles this season. She reunited with her former partner Hsieh Su-wei and the two won the Australian Open and the Indian Wells Open.
The Belgian has tasted modest success in singles, with a runner-up finish at the Hobart International being her best result, followed by quarterfinals in Linz and Charleston, and a fourth-round finish at Indian Wells.
Mertens started her grass swing at the Libema Open and faced Naomi Osaka in the first round. She proved to be no match for the four-time Major champion and lost to her in straight sets.
Wozniacki had a slow start to the season and won only one match across her first three tournaments. Her lone victory was also via her opponent's mid-match retirement. She rediscovered her form at the Indian Wells Open, where she reached the quarterfinals.

Mertens was ousted by a Major champion just last week, and now faces another one in her opener in Birmingham. She was outhit by Osaka at the Libema Open but that's unlikely to happen against Wozniacki, who isn't a powerful ballstriker like the Japanese.
Aside from one good run at Indian Wells, Wozniacki has failed to impress this year. She's had some memorable results on grass in the past, winning a couple of titles in Eastbourne over the years. However, she never made it beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon.
