Leylah Fernandez vs Sara Sorribes Tormo preview
Sixth seed Leylah Fernandez faces a tricky opening test in the form of Sara Sorribes Tormo at the 2024 Rothesay Classic in Birmingham on Monday, June 17.
Fernandez has had a modest 2024 by her lofty standards, managing only 11 wings against 12 losses this year. Her best result yet is a quarterfinal showing in Qatar, where she beat the likes of Liudmila Samsonova and Qinwen Zheng before going down to third seed Elena Rybakina in straight sets.
Fernandez is coming off an underwhelming run on the clay this season, managing to only conjure a 4-5 match record on the surface. She did, however, display glimpses of brilliance in the French capital until she was taken down by eighth seed Ons Jabeur in the third round.
Sorribes Tormo, on the contrary, is 10-15 this season. She overcame a slow start to the season with a brilliant claycourt swing. She reached the fourth round in Madrid, the third round in Italy, and the quarterfinals in Morocco in the lead-up to the French Open where 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu blew her away in straight sets in the opening round.

Leylah Fernandez vs Sara Sorribes Tormo prediction
Fans can expect an epic duel between Leylah Fernandez and Sara Sorribes Tormo in the first round of the 2024 Rothesay Classic with both players heading on the back of similar runs so far this year.
Fernandez has had an extremely sub-par campaign by her lofty standards. She's failed to make it past the last eight of any tournament. Sorribes Tormo too has been marred by inconsistency. She has unfortunately not been able to carry her winning momentum from the doubles circuit into her singles game.
Neither player has an advantage over the other on the surface. Both players favor clay courts the most and could struggle initially considering this is their first match on the grass in nearly a year. Serving well and approaching the net will be key, especially on the first few days when the courts are playing fast.
Fernandez still walks in as the clear favorite and should be able to make it through with relative ease. Sorribes Tormo will have to be at her best from the back of the court and attack whenever required if she is to stake her claim for the win.
Pick: Leylah Fernandez to win in straight sets.
