Iga Swiatek vs Emma Raducanu preview

Top seed Iga Swiatek will take on Emma Raducanu on Tuesday (March 14) for a place in the BNP Paribas Open quarterfinals.

World No. 1 Swiatek's title defense has gone to plan so far, beating Claire Liu 6-0, 6-1 for the loss of just one game and 32nd seed Bianca Andreescu 6-3, 7-6(1) in straight sets. With the pair of wins, the top-ranked Pole is now 14-3 on the season.

Earlier, Swiatek opened her 2023 campaign at the United Cup, where she won three of her four matches, with her only loss coming against Jessica Pegula in the semifinals against Team USA. However, her run at the Australian Open was ended in the fourth round by eventual finalist Elena Rybakina.

At her next stop, Swiatek defended her Doha title by beating Pegula, avenging her United Cup defeat in the process. The Pole looked poised for another title at the Dubai Tennis Championships but endured defeat against Barbora Krejcikova in the final. However, Swiatek's campaign at Indian Wells has gone well so far, not dropping a set in two matches.

Meanwhile, the 77th-ranked Raducanu improved to 5-2 on the season with a trio of wins at Indian Wells. After second-round exits at Auckland and the Australian Open, the 2021 US Open champion has found form in California, dropping just one set in three matches. That includes two seeded scalps - 20th seed Magda Linette and 13th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia - in successive rounds.

Swiatek took the pair's lone meeting in the Stuttgart quarterfinals last year, so their head-to-head record is 1-0 in favor of the Pole.

Emma Raducanu at the 2023 BNP Paribas Open

Both Swiatek and Raducanu are quintessential baseliners, but the Pole's superior movement, consistency and depth of shot-making give her a distinct advantage.

Moreover, the World No. 1 is poised for another dominant season after her brilliant 2022 campaign that yielded multiple Grand Slam and WTA 1000 titles. Meanwhile, Raducanu is yet to find the form that made her a Grand Slam champion 18 months ago at Flushing Meadows.

While Raducanu has certainly looked far better in Indian Wells this week, her overall game does not have the same strength as the in-form Swiatek's, making the three-time Grand Slam champion the overwhelming favorite in the tie.

Prediction: Swiatek in straight sets
