Frances Tiafoe vs Adam Walton preview
Fourth seed Frances Tiafoe will duke it out against Adam Walton in the first round of the Brisbane International 2025.
Tiafoe could only give his best on home soil in 2024. Of his 33 wins during the year, 21 were in the US. He progressed to his first-ever Masters 1000 final at the Cincinnati Open, and came up short against the in-form Jannik Sinner. He also advanced to his second semifinal in three years at the US Open.
Tiafoe came quite close to defending his title in Houston but lost to Ben Shelton in the final. He also reached the semifinals in Washington and Delray Beach, and the quarterfinals in Dallas and Atlanta. Outside of the US, his best results were quarterfinal appearances in Almaty, Stuttgart, and Hong Kong, all ATP 250 events.
Walton, meanwhile, recorded some big milestones this year. He made his main draw debut at all four Majors, though he could only tally a win at Wimbledon, where he made the second round. He also qualified for the Miami Open to make his Masters 1000 debut but lost in the first round.
Walton registered his first main draw win at the ATP level at the Mallorca Open prior to Wimbledon. He won his next match at the Atlanta Open, which remains his latest win of the year on the ATP Tour, as he lost his next five matches. He also competed on the Challenger circuit, where had a 41-20 record there, with two titles and four runner-up finishes.
Frances Tiafoe vs Adam Walton head-to-head
This will be their first career meeting, so the head-to-head stands at 0-0 for now.

Frances Tiafoe vs Adam Walton prediction
After underperforming outside the US in 2024, Tiafoe will look to remedy that this season. He will be the overwhelming favorite to win against Walton, who has only three main draw wins at the ATP level and will contest his first match against a top 20 player.
However, Tiafoe's track record makes him susceptible to an upset. He has participated in six ATP 250 tournaments before the Australian Open in the southern hemisphere since 2018 but has never won a match. He lost to Matthew Edben on his Brisbane debut in 2018 and was knocked out by John Millman in the first round in Sydney the following year.
Switching countries didn't help, as Tiafoe failed to get past the opening hurdle in Auckland as well in 2020. Corentin Moutet ousted him the first round in 2021, and he tasted defeat twice in 2022, losing to Thanasi Kokkinakis and Tommy Paul respectively in the first round in Adelaide.
Tiafoe bucked the trend in 2023 by participating in the United Cup, and won all of his singles matches as the US won the title. He started his season in Hong Kong in 2024, and reached the quarterfinals. Against a relatively inexperienced opponent like Walton, this will be his best chance to fix this unflattering stat.
Pick: Frances Tiafoe to win in straight sets
