Nick Kyrgios vs Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard preview
Home favorite Nick Kyrgios will face Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round of the Brisbane International 2025.
Kyrgios advanced to his maiden Major final at Wimbledon 2022, and lost to Novak Djokovic in four sets. He also won his first Major title in doubles at the Australian Open that year. Just when it looked like he was finally hitting his stride, injury woes sidelined him for the last two years.
Kyrgios underwent surgeries to deal with his knee and wrist issues, causing him to sit out the 2023 and 2024 seasons. He returned to action over a week ago at the World Tennis League, an exhibition event in Dubai. The Brisbane International will be the first professional tournament of his comeback.
21-year-old Mpetshi Perricard made quite an impression in 2024 and was one of the breakout stars of the season. He received a wildcard to participate in the Lyon Open in May, which marked his first main draw appearance at the ATP level this year. He ended up winning the whole thing and beat two top 30 players en route to the title.
Mpetshi Perricard fell in the qualifying rounds of Wimbledon but received a second shot as a lucky loser. He capitalized on the opportunity and reached the fourth round. After a few early exits, he capped off the season on a high by winning his second career title in Basel. He defeated Ben Shelton in the final to win his first title at the ATP 500 level.

Nick Kyrgios vs Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard prediction
Mpetshi Perricard was ranked just outside the top 200 in January 2024, and peaked at No. 30 in November. Even though his results on the main tour were inconsistent, he did have quite a few highs and displayed tremendous growth.
Kyrgios will try to pick up from where he left off in 2022, though it could take some time. After a couple of surgeries, his body could take some time getting used to the grind of the tour, and Mpetshi Perricard is a relatively tough opponent to face this early.
The young Frenchman's game is based around his huge serve. He hit an average of 19 aces per match in 2024, the most on the ATP Tour this year. While he's lagging compared to his peers in other aspects of his game, he is proving to be a quick learner. Even if Kyrgios' body holds up, Mpetshi Perricard should be able to come through this clash.
Pick: Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard to win in straight sets.
