Former World No. 2 Ons Jabeur will take on Elina Avanesyan in the third round of the Brisbane International on Thursday.

Jabeur had an ordinary season last year considering her high standards. She garnered 16 wins from 30 matches, including quarterfinal runs in Abu Dhabi, Madrid, Paris and Berlin. She also reached the third round of the Wimbledon Championships but lost to Elina Svitolina in straight sets.

The Tunisian started her campaign in Brisbane with a solid win over Zheng Saisai. She then humbled the 14th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the second round, 6-3, 6-2. Jabeur will be eager to make a deep run in Paris.

Elina Avanesyan, meanwhile, had a promising season on tour last year. She almost clinched her first WTA tour at the Lasi Open, but Mirra Andreeva stood in her way in the finals. She also reached the fourth round of the French Open in Paris, but lost to Jasmine Paolini in three-sets.

The 22-year-old started her campaign in Brisbane with a hard fought win over Rebecca Sramkova. She then overpowered Paula Badosa in the second round, 6-3,1-6, 6-2. Avanesyan will be hoping to present a stern challenge to Jabeur in the next round.
