Reilly Opelka vs Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard preview

Two unseeded players will clash in the semifinals of the Brisbane International as Reilly Opelka of the United States will take on Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard of France on Saturday, January 4.

The ongoing tournament in Brisbane is turning out to be a great one for Opelka, who made a comeback from an injury not so long ago. Opelka beat top-seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia 7-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinal to book his place in the last four.

Meanwhile, Perricard has been probably even more special in the tournament. He has prevailed in three close matches in Brisbane so far. First, he defeated Nick Kyrgios in a match involving three tie-breaks. Then, he beat fourth-seed Frances Tiafoe in the Round of 16 and then overcame Jakub Mensik 7-5, 7-6 to reach the semifinals.

Reilly Opelka vs Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard prediction

Opelka definitely has more experience at the highest level than the 21-year-old Frenchman. However, on Saturday, Opelka will for once come across a player who can match him in terms of raw power.

Both Opelka and Perricard are huge men, which means that they can potentially hurt each other with their serve. As Opelka's victory over Djokovic showed, the American can tame even the best returner of serve with his booming serve. Perricard's ground-game is hardly comparable to Djokovic's and hence, he will have to serve really well to make a match of it in the semifinals.

However, the young Frenchman has age by his side, which means that he should move better than Opelka on the court. If he can take the match into the third set, he might stand a chance of beating Opelka. However, as Perricard has played three tough matches, it also remains to be seen whether the Frenchman has enough left in his tank for Saturday's semifinal.

Pick: Opelka to win in three sets.
