The ascendancy in 2015
Andy Murray has had a very good 2015, so far boasting a 41-6 record this year with three titles. He beat Rafael Nadal on clay for the very first time in his career this year, beating him in the finals of Madrid Masters. He is the only player who has looked capable of challenging Novak Djokovic’s hegemony on the men’s tour this year.
He won his fourth Queen’s title last week, beating two good grass court players on the final day. It brings him into elite company, as he joins John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Andy Roddick and Leyton Hewitt as the other men who have won this title four times. The win gave him his 34th career title and continued his resurgence this year.
Compatriot Guilles Muller commented on Murray’s form this year: "He's been playing really well, especially this year he's really been... I think he's back on where he was when he was winning Grand Slams”.
Now the big question is whether he can continue his rise and do well at the Championships.
Great On Grass
He has a great career record on grass, second only to Roger Federer amongst current players. His win-loss record on grass reads 83-16. He beat Federer to win the 2012 Olympic Gold and Djokovic to win his 2013 Wimbledon title, both on grass.
Murray possesses a great first serve, good movement on grass, great variety and touch, and is amongst the best returners of all time. His game is suited to grass. It remains to be seen whether he can peak when it matters the most. However there is one major roadblock he needs to remove if he is to win. His name is Novak Djokovic.
Murray’s Achilles Heel
Murray has fought for all top titles this year, only coming short to Novak Djokovic on all occasions. He lost to Djokovic in the finals of Australian Open and Miami Masters, as well as semis of French Open and Indian Wells. He now lags Djokovic 8-19 in career head to head.
However, he has looked the second best player on the planet throughout this season, and the gap between him and Djokovic seems to have reduced as the season has progressed. The French Open encounter when he came back from a two set deficit to take the match into a fifth set was ample testimony to this fact.
Future Outlook
Murray will have the home crowd support to urge him on and inner motivation to finally win a big one. The addition of Bjonas Bjorkman to his team will help his volleys and net play further. If he can overcome his inner demons against guys like Nadal and Djokovic, we might see him lifting a second Wimbledon title and cementing his place amongst the top grass court players of current generation. His time in the spotlight may finally arrive!
