The fifth day of the 2023 Chile Open in Santiago on Friday (March 3) will feature all four quarterfinals. Two seeds and a qualifier will be in action.
On Thursday, Dusan Lajovic, Laslo Djere, Sebastian Baez and Tomas Martin Etcheverry reached the last eight. They beat Juan Manuel Cerundolo, Riccardo Bonadio, Cristian Garin and second seed Francisco Cerundolo respectively.
Without further ado, here's a look at how the four quarterfinals could pan out at the Chile Open on Friday:
#1 Dusan Lajovic vs Tomas Martin Etcheverry
Dusan Lajovic will take on Tomas Martin Etcheverry for a place in the semifinals of the Chile Open.
World No. 75 Lajovic improved to 7-4 in 2023 by beating Camilo Ugo Carabeli and Juan Manuel Cerundolo in this tournament.
Meanwhile, the 76th-ranked Etcheverry beat Fabio Fognini and second seed Francisco Cerundolo this week and is now 4-5 on the season. Etcheverry could take this first-time matchup.
Prediction: Etcheverry in three sets.
#2 Laslo Djere vs Sebastian Baez (2022 Chile Open runner-up)
Sixth seed Laslo Djere will take on third seed Sebastian Baez in the second quarterfinal of the Chile Open.
The 55th-ranked Djere is 9-5 on the season following victories over Joao Sousa and Riccardo Bonadio this week. Meanwhile, World No. 35 Baez beat Cristian Garin to open his campaign and improve to 7-5 in 2023.
Djere and Baez have never met before, but expect the 2022 finalist to take this first-time matchup.
Prediction: Baez in straight sets.
#3 Jaume Munar vs Thiago Monteiro
World No. 66 Jaume Munar will take on the 84th-ranked Thiago Monteiro in an all-unseeded quarterfinal at the Chile Open.
Munar beat Alejandro Tabilo and top seed Lorenzo Musetti to improve to 3-5 on the season. Meanwhile, Monteiro has survived a pair of three-setters this week, seeing off fellow left-hander Albert Ramos-Vinolas and former Roland Garros semifinalist Marco Cecchinato. The Brazilian is now 4-7 in 2023.
Munar has won two of his three previous meetings with Monteiro and should prevail again.
Prediction: Munar in three sets.
#4 Nicolas Jarry vs Jannik Hanfmann
Nicolas Jarry will lock horns with qualifier Yannik Hanfmann to complete the semifinal lineup in Santiago.
The 87th-ranked Jarry improved to 7-2 in 2023 with victories over Juan Pablo Varillas and Diego Schwartzman this week. Meanwhile, World No. 153 Hanfman is now 2-2 on the season after wins against Pedro Martinez and Roberto Carballes Baena.
Jarry took their lone meeting at Gstaad in 2022 and should be able to win again.
Prediction: Jarry in three sets.
