Amanda Anisimova will kick off her 2024 China Open campaign against home favorite Wang Xinyu in the first round.

Anisimova heads into the Chinese capital with an 18-12 match record this year. She returned to the Tour at the start of the year after an eight-month hiatus. She reached the fourth round at the Australian Open, where she lost to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka. Her struggles were apparent on the clay and grass, however, as she mustered a paltry 2-5 record while also failing to qualify for Wimbledon.

Anisimova returned to form at the start of the North American hardcourt swing, reaching the quarterfinals in Washington. She then made her first WTA 1000 final in Toronto, where she lost to compatriot Jessica Pegula in three sets. Her US Open campaign ended prematurely in the first round against seventh seed Zheng Qinwen. Last week, she participated in the Korea Open, defeating Yulia Putinseva in the first round before retiring while trailing 7-5, 4-1 against Viktoriya Tomova.

Wang holds a 23-21 match record for the year. She reached the semifinals of the Thailand Open at the start of the season but struggled to maintain consistency until the French Open, where she reached the third round. She matched her best Grand Slam performance with an impressive fourth-round run at Wimbledon, defeating Pegula before losing to Elina Svitolina.

Wang's biggest achievement this year came at the Olympic Games, where she won a silver medal in mixed doubles alongside Zhang Zhizhen. The North American hardcourt swing saw her compile a modest 2-3 record, with early defeats in Cincinnati and New York. Last week, she participated in Hua Hin as the third seed but suffered a surprising second-round loss to Rebeka Masarova.

Amanda Anisimova and Wang Xinyu's opening round encounter promises plenty of excitement, given the high level both players are capable of.

Anisimova enters this match following an impressive run on hard courts this year. While consistency has eluded her recently, her game and confidence have both been on the top of their mark. Her serve has also been steadily improving, along with her ability to dictate play from the baseline.

Wang, on the other hand, has been in a slight rut lately but has found some of her best form on the hardcourts this season. The slightly slower playing surface at home in China is likely to benefit her, given the local conditions and her stronger defensive game.

Wang's ranking makes her the favorite on paper, but Anisimova's superior recent form tips the balance in her favor. The American should win this contest if she continues to serve as she has during the summer and maintains her aggressive approach.

Pick: Anisimova in straight sets.
