Third seed Daniil Medvedev will face French veteran Adrian Mannarino in a highly anticipated second-round match at the 2024 China Open on Sunday, September 29. The winner will meet either Flavio Cobolli or Pavel Kotov in the quarterfinals.

Medvedev entered Beijing with a 39-16 match record so far this year but has yet to win a title. He reached the finals of the Australian Open and Indian Wells, losing to Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, respectively. During the clay court swing, he reached the quarterfinals at the Madrid Open and the fourth round at Roland Garros.

At Wimbledon, Medvedev impressed everybody by making it to the semifinals, where he again lost to Alcaraz. His North American hard-court swing, however, was disappointing by his lofty standards, as he exited in the first round in Montreal and Cincinnati, though he did reach the quarterfinals of the US Open.

He featured last at the Laver Cup, where he went 0-2 in singles but still lifted the cup with Team Europe. He opened his campaign at the China Open with a dominant 6-3, 6-4 victory over another French veteran, Gael Monfils.

Mannarino too has had an inconsistent season so far, as reflected in his 12-25 match record on tour. He began the year strong, reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open and the semifinals in Dallas, but has struggled to maintain those levels since. His clay and grass court swings were particularly disappointing, with no wins on the former and just one on the latter.

During the North American hardcourt swing, he experienced a five-match losing streak, finally breaking it in New York with a first-round win against Borna Coric at the US Open, before losing to David Goffin in the next round. Last week in Chengdu, he reached the quarterfinals but lost to top seed Lorenzo Musetti. Mannarino started his campaign in Beijing with an impressive 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 comeback win against Lorenzo Sonego.

Daniil Medvedev vs Adrian Mannarino head-to-head

Adrian Mannarino surprisingly leads Daniil Medvedev 4-3 in their head-to-head record, although it was the Russian who won their most recent encounter at Wimbledon last year. They are tied 1-1 on hardcourt.

Daniil Medvedev hardly broke a sweat in his opener, dominating Gael Monfils in nearly every aspect of the match. He looked in control for most of the match apart from a couple of shaky service games in the second set. His strong baseline play ensured he sealed the win with relative ease.

Mannarino, in contrast, faced a tough challenge right from the start aganst Sonego. While it seemed like he was heading for yet another loss, he dramatically turned things around in the second and third sets with fearless play both from the baseline and at the net.

Medvedev heads into this matchup with the more impressive career hardcourt record, boasting a 23-9 record this year, compared to Mannarino's 10-16. The Russian is also aiming to reach his eighth quarterfinal of the year, while Mannarino seeks only his second. Although past results favor Mannarino, their current form suggests that Medvedev will navigate this match relatively ease.

Pick: Daniil Medvedev to win in straight sets.
